VHA and The Obama Foundation

Ms. Dejah Powell, a Vanderpoel Alumna with a passion to educate her community on the benefits of healthy food and living a healthy lifestyle.  As a recent graduate of Cornell University, and now one of the founding partners of Black&Well, she and her fellow Vanderpoel Alumna Kaysi Gray (Vanderpoel, Whitney Young H.S. and Howard University) and LaNae Plaxico (Whitney Young H.S. and Ohio State University) are partnered with The Obama Foundation and are focused on bringing valuable resources and programing to their home and school community.

The first of three events was held Saturday, September 29th  at Vanderpoel Humanities Academy.  Over 50 families and friends joined the Black & Well group in a Yoga and Wellness event.  Participants learned about eating clean, mental and physical wellness and compeleted one session of “slow burn” yoga, led by LaNae a certified yoga instructor.

Dejah is responsible for securing the funding for our school garden, the installation of a new refillable water fountain, and future projects like,  Food bowls, Cooking courses and more. Her project research information will be presented to The Obama Foundation November 18th, for full sponsorship.

We are super excited to support Dejah, as she has supported our school family.
